How to decorate your office on a low budget

Whats more fun than going shopping and decorating? Umm… Probably a million things, when it comes to spending huge amounts of money on furniture, I’m out! Don’t get me wrong, I love decorating, but I hate the price tags, which is probably very normal – seeing me arguing with the price tag is probably not.

This time we had a new task to accomplish and it’s decorating a office for a very cool company called Blueroom d.o.o. I assume you figured it out what is the main office colour. But for decorating a office there is a lot more to think about than just colours. The office is your home away from home. It’s a place where you spend most of your time, it’s the path to business success and is a big part of the public face of your company.

Blue stimulates productivity and creativity

We went shopping to Ikea and here are some tips we had in mind on how to decorate your dreamy office without busting your budget.

Reuse or refinish

Take inventory of items you have at home, in the basement or maybe a friend has something you could use. Try different ways to reuse or refinish these items to give the item a new look or a new purpose. There are many possibilities for an old desk to look chic and businessy. Try painting the walls or just adding designer prints or pictures on the walls.

Set your budget and make a list of what you have and what you need. For example we needed a couch, two sofas, three chairs, carpet, coffee table and other little accessories that brighten up the place. Visit different second-hand or vintage stores or even garage sales. Just let your imagination go wild. Maybe even include any local artists or young enthusiast to make you a one of a kind art piece.

First things first – Colour. As we mentioned our main colour is blue, so we decided to add blue blinds and a blue carpet. We didn’t want to over do it with the blue, so we added white, black and beige furniture. As I mentioned before paint is a relatively inexpensive way to change the look and feel of your office, and give it a fresh look. I know that wondering about where to put your business logo and what color of paint to use may seem trivial, but believe me they can have a powerful psychological impact when potential customers or clients come calling.

Organization and storage

It’s crucial that you are able to provide enough space to store and organize all the papers and files you need to keep in your office. Hanging files, woven baskets or plastic bins can keep your papers organized without costing too much. Declare war on office clutter!

There are tons of options on how to brighten up your work space with simple accessories that bring in a lot of character. Try using different light that do not cost much, but make your office look calm and inviting. Be sure to take full advantage of any natural light available to your workspace. Keep away from buzzing fluorescent lights and add indirect lighting, such as lamps and task lights.

Everything is important and seeable in the office, don’t forget about decorative pots, vases or urns as pen holders on your desk. Add a couple of plants that are also very inexpensive and create a clean air environment in your office. Display your books or encyclopedia set on a bookshelf. Maybe add an whiteboard  and write a motivational message.

Feng Shui

It’s important that you are in a position of power. If you aren’t a Feng Shui master, no worries… It’s easy to see/feel where are you most comfortable. Do consider putting your desk where you combine personal privacy and comfort with the ability to greet visitors and communicate with co-workers.

The only thing I think is very important in investing is chairs. You and your employees are sitting on those chairs every day and by having back pain – here comes productivity drain. This is an investment that can save you a lot of money down the line.

I wish you a happy, more healthful work environment and with that a lot of upcoming business success!
