Healthy Apple Berry Crumble


It’s getting colder and colder on this side of the world. I was quite busy the past few weeks, creating in the kitchen actually, but couldn’t find the time to write up my recipes here for you. As you all probably noticed my mum is also visiting us here in New Zealand, I’ve been driving her around as much as I could and showing her the beauty of this lovely island. Secretly my evil plan is succeeding; she is falling in love with this country and I know I’ll be seeing her a lot around our remote country, yipee! She has been eating a lot of my cooking as well and this is one the all time favourites. Healthy Apple Berry Crumble, perfect for all seasons, for us I served it with a cup of tea, for all you who are enjoying summer, you can have this with a scoop of healthy ice cream (jealous!).


  • 2 cups oats
  • 1 cup almond flour
  • ¼ cup applesauce
  • ¼ cup maple syrup
  • 2 Tbsp coconut oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp fine grain sea salt
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp cinnamon


  • 1 cup apples,  peeled and grated
  • 3 cups blueberries (or any berries)
  • 1 Tbsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp fine grain sea salt
  • zest of 1 organic lemon
  • 1 Tbsp arrowroot powder
  • 1 Tbsp honey

Crumble Topping

  • 1 cup oats
  • 2 Tbsp maple syrup
  • 2 Tbsp coconut oil (or butter)
  • 1 cup shredded coconut (or any ground nut)
  • ½ tsp ground ginger
  • pinch salt
  • 2 Tbsp buckwheat or any other flour

Preheat oven to 180°C.  In a food processor blend the oats until you get flour like consistency. Add all other ingredients for the crust. Place the dough in a baking dish a press.

For the filling combine all ingredients in a bowl. Put them on top of the crust.

For the crumble, combine all the ingredients in a small bowl and mix. Sprinkle it over the fruit layer. Place in the oven for 30 minutes until golden. Let cool completely. Serve with tea or ice cream.
