Behind the scenes of a Reindeer weather forecast

On 24.12. it wasn’t just another ordinary weather report, it was a reindeer weather report! Fully in a Christmas mood, I decided that it is necessary to make a Christmassy weather, even though there was no snow, only rain coming.

You would think I had a problem getting up at 4am for such a festive day, but it was really fun working, because everyone was relaxed and in a very jolly mood. Here are some photos from the backstage, from getting my hair and make up done to being on set. Many don’t know that what you see behind me (the weather or a picture) I can’t see it on set. I see it on my left and right small monitors. Behind me is a big blue wall called chroma key. This is a special effect / post-production technique for layering two images or video streams together based on color hues. The technique has been used heavily in many fields to remove a background from the subject of a photo or video – particularly the newscasting. A color range in the top layer is made transparent, revealing another image behind. So you see Slovenia and the temperatures, while I see a blue wall.

The best invention for television is probably the teleprompter. For orientation many use it and can read from it. Teleprompter or autocue, is a display device that prompts the person speaking with an electronic visual text of a speech or script. This way we know and all the staff knows what is coming up next.

Where I broadcast the weather, we film it in the studio. The studio floor is the actual stage on which the actions that will be recorded take place.

Director, assistant, mixer and the graphics takes place in the studio control room (SCR). It is the place in a television studio in which the composition of the outgoing program takes place. It is the main place where the activities such as switching from camera to camera are coordinated. It includes:

A video monitor wall, where the director sees what every camera is filming.
A vision mixer a large control panel used to select the multiple camera and other various sources to be recorded or seen on air
A audio mixing console and other audio equipment such as effects devices
A character generator, (my name written below) which creates the majority of the names and full digital on-screen graphics that are inserted into the program lower third portion of the television screen
DVE, digital video effects for manipulation of video sources
The technical directors station
Intercom equipment for communication with TV crew
And the teleprompter station, where a person spins the text for the broadcaster.

That is all I am familiar with for now, I’ve probably forgotten something, so I do apologize. This is a description from my perspective.
