We visited our family in Montpellier for a week, which was my first time in this, at any time, the most seductive city in the French south. Not that I’m a big fan of architecture, but this place is very inspiring by its massive central square. As an incurable foodie, of course I will not talk about architecture, but about my favorite spots to eat, drink and indulge.
In summer it’s a must to sit out on the Comédie, France’s most graceful central square, and having a touristy coffee in the morning. Head for a walk and grab a croissant on the nearest market at the Arc de Triomphe. Have a stroll around the little streets, shop and start thinking about lunch!
Saveurs et Sens on 55 Rue Alexandre Cabanel. It simply does not get better than Saveurs et Sens. This is one restaurant not to miss! It’s mostly fully booked, so be sure to make an reservation for lunch or dinner. The food is perfectly prepared, the ambiance exceptional, and the hosts very accommodating to special requests.
If you have small children, I really recommend Chez Ninou! On 14 rue des Soeurs Noires. An absolute must for any parents who want a peaceful and fine meal in Montpellier. Limited choice of mains but both excellent – organic quiche with salad, soup and best cheesecake! Homemade and delicious. There are number of toys on offer. Friendly staff and efficient service.
On your trip you’ll see the most sexy trams I have ever seen. Designed latterly by Christian Lacroix as moving tableaux. It takes a startling city to make trams sexy. The city is absolutely elegant, cultured and filled with delicious cuisine. I had to explore more coffee stops. And I stopped at a café conveniently called coffee club 😉 Coffee was delicious and they have a variety of delicious gluten free cakes to offer.
Another café worth to mention is Fairview Coffee on 6 rue Loys, amazing filter coffee and the smell of freshly baked muffins is worth just sitting there! They have a variety of teas and for summer time you can cool down with a special ice tea and expect smiling service with impeccable English, at last! J At last, a funky, relaxed, jazzy coffee place laden with character. Not exactly cheap, but worth the extra.
Don’t forget about delicious galletes or crepes where you can find them all around. I’ve heard that the Petit Creperie is good, but I didn’t get the chance to try it out.
For dinner I would definetly recommend Le Bourgeon. At this time, the burgers are a big hit. And it does not displease me! But what if I tell you that everything there is organic and 100% bio? Yes, they have three varieties of veggie patties as well and the most amazing salads. The restaurant is located just a few steps from the Church of St. Roch, rue Jules Latreilhe. The décor is very natural with furniture pallets, if they had not been used in this way, they would have been burned, very eco friendly! I love it! It is beautiful and cozy. My big favorite detail were the bio small plants placed on each table. For a great end of your trip/evening don’t forget to have a glass or two of their red wine.
